This year we partnered with the Seneca County Substance Abuse Coalition to recognize Black Balloon Day on March 6th, which reminds us to set aside some time to remember those who have died as a result of substance misuse. As a visual marker of support, we display black balloons to spark conversations and raise awareness about overdose deaths. There are 7 black balloons and 3 red balloons to spread the message of the DEA’s One Pill Can Kill campaign (7 out of 10 pills tested by the DEA contain lethal amounts of fentanyl). That’s why it is important that everyone – young and old – remember to only take pills given to them by their doctor or pharmacist.
Black Balloon Day is a national and international event that was founded by a family who lost not only a member of their family, but who was also a father to four children. In setting out a black balloon or finding another way to honor the day, all of us can do our part to share with others the true dangers of substance misuse—and potentially save a life in the process.

Students in the TC3 Painting I class were recently able to work with South Seneca alumni and professional plein air painter, Kari Ganoung-Ruiz.
Kari shared her knowledge of notan, plein air, and acrylic painting techniques. Kari showcased some of her tangible and digital works, offered demonstrations and feedback to students, and spoke of her love for painting.
Students learned about using a viewfinder to capture a quality composition, structures of shadows to create eye movement in a painting, and how to create a unique underpainting and still life. At the end of the presentation, students walked away with more knowledge and loved the presentation.
If you are interested in seeing some of Kari's works, please visit her website at http://www.kariganoungruiz.com/

As part of our work with students and the vast changes in education technology, our school has begun work with and AI(Artificial Intelligence) committee to explore tools for school. Today two AI committee members, Ms. Clearman and Mr. Collins, planned a teacher PD session around two possible AI tools for schools. We will continue to work with the committee, area BOCES and data privacy officers in our region to safely explore and vet the new possibilities in AI.
