JOINT PRESS RELEASE
SENECA COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE
SOUTH SENECA CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT
Seneca County Sheriff Timothy Thompson reports, on October 1st, 2024 at approximately 4:00pm, Investigators arrested Everett J. Babcock, age 62 of Ovid, NY, for the crime of Criminal Possession of a Weapon on School Grounds, a class E Felony.
The South Seneca Junior/Senior High School Resource Officer was alerted to the possibility of a weapon being on school grounds. An immediate investigation began, and a .22 caliber long rifle along with ammunition were discovered in the maintenance building. School officials and members of the Sheriff’s Office have deemed the incident as isolated and have confirmed that there was no immediate threat to students or faculty.
South Seneca Superintendent Zielinski added, “On Tuesday afternoon this week we learned that our employee had been accused of keeping a firearm unsecured on our campus, and we are grateful for the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office’s swift action in response. Safety and security has always been, and will always be, a primary concern for the district, and in 2024 no one should have any confusion about bringing firearms of any kind into a school district. We will cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation”.
Everett Babcock was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear at the Ovid Town Court on October 15, 2024 to answer the charge.

Homecoming week is full of opportunities for students and staff to share in the fun. Looking forward also this week to our continued work with Sweethearts and Heroes.

Today is National Custodial Appreciation Day. Thank you to our incredible staff for keeping our schools clean and healthy. We appreciate you all! #foreverfalcons

Our Floriculture class gave a New York twist to a Texas tradition: the Homecoming Mum! Students learned about the rich history of this unique Homecoming tradition and how it's grown into a big celebration in Texas. To kick off our own Homecoming Week, students crafted their own mums in school colors!

We had a special visitor today to help us kick off Spirit Week. Thanks to Mr. F, and congratulations to the students for making this happen by earning over 500 Falcon Four tickets last week.

You're not going to want to miss this one. #foreverfalcons

Our Falcon Four kick-off was a blast! 🎉 Students raced in a relay, grabbing pieces from the center and working together to build the tallest tower. Teamwork, fun, and positive behavior all in one!

Breana Copp's High School students recently explored color mixing and color theory by creating frosted cookie color wheels in a TC3 Painting class.
Additionally, students in the photography class are learning about the history of photography and how the first photographic prints were created. They have begun exploring cyanotypes and how when you expose a light-sensitive paper to sunlight, it will create an image.

Students in Animal Studies had fun practicing Classification with snack foods today—learning and snacking all in one hands-on activity!

So glad to be back to football evenings cheering for the Falcons. I love the way our community supports our kids. The energy is real! Go Falcons!

Congratulations to our Legend of Learning, Abel! We try weekly to recognize students who embody our four C's and are curious, cooperative, careful, and courteous.

Today, we had the pleasure of welcoming Emily Wemmer, Director of Regional School Success at TST-BOCES, to our MS/HS Faculty Meeting! Emily led a valuable session on Equitable Grading and Standards-Based Grading practices, setting a strong foundation for the important work our staff will be engaging in throughout the year. Excited for the journey ahead!

Dear South Seneca Community,
After more than 30 years now in our district, I have reached my retirement year, and I am writing today to let you know I will step down as Superintendent on March 7, 2025. Retirement will allow me to address a few lingering health issues, and to spend time with my family more than I have been able to do while on the job.
I will work hard in the months ahead to ensure a smooth transition to my successor, and to position the district well to handle the challenges of an uncertain state budget situation. We will continue to move in a positive direction for our facilities and energy plan, and the team we have in place will carry that work forward expertly. I have full confidence in them.
It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve this community for three decades as a teacher, a principal, and for twelve years as superintendent. I carry countless memories of interactions with former students and colleagues here that I will cherish forever. The campuses themselves look very different from when I began back in 1994, and I never tire of seeing the community take advantage of all we have to offer in the district, including use of the track we built together in 2017.
Programmatically, we’ve transformed our student experience to meet the changing landscape of the 21st century, and we continue to offer new pathways to success for graduates, even while we work tirelessly to bring meaningful and high quality opportunities for them during their PK-12 years. We’ve responded to the need for better safety, security, and wellness in our buildings, and we navigated our way through a global pandemic as a community.
Most of all, I remain impressed again and again to see the way the community takes care of one another, in good times and bad. I’ve done my best every day I’ve been here to contribute to that effort myself, and I know South Seneca will continue to thrive under new leadership after I am gone, because it’s a foundation of what exists here in this district. I’ve worked extensively around the state in my career, and I always want people here to know: South Seneca is special! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the chance to be part of our long history.
Steve
