Reading emphasis is on progression from grades 6-8 on reading more complex texts, understanding genres of written material, recognizing literary elements, and developing strategies for analyzing and extracting meaning from informational text. Students will learn to make connections from background knowledge and personal experience to a wide range of written material.

Writing emphasis is on progression from grades 6-8 in sentence structure, expertise with grammar and writing conventions, and fluency. Students will learn to develop a written argument and support assertions with facts. They will also have the opportunity to write creatively, experimenting with genres like storytelling and poetry. In addition, students will learn about informal vs. formal writing, understanding the context of formats like writing online vs. writing for an employer or a college.
